Telling Tales
Attended the "Telling Tales" family festival of stories at Westfield heritage Village in Rockton today. This was a free event (donations appreciated) with an unbelievable number of volunteers role playing as pioneers and acting as guides. All throughout the village there were story telling events, acting and singing. Some of the authors present were Lean Little, Lesley Livingston, Robert Paul Weston, Mireille Messier and Mahtab Narisimhan. Performers included Turkey Rhubarb, Jude Johnson and Rob Blunsdon. There were actors walking around in character such as Captain Cook from Peter Pan and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz and Graybeard. In addition to the story telling centers the heritage exhibits were opened and manned by friendly knowledgeable volunteers. We learned about making felt out of beaver pelts, how the pioneers built dove-tail joints when wood working to avoid the need for nails or glue and sat inside the oldest old growth log church in Canada.
Highly recommend heading out to Westfield some Sunday for a tour. Stop at the store and get a bottle of soda, and a humbug. Terrific, educational and fun.

youth outdoors day 2011
I attended this fabulous event on Saturday with my kids. Hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and funded through donations. This was a free event with a yummy lunch included and took place at Luther Marsh near Arthur. The kids made beautiful wooden bird feeders, learned about bugs from John Powers, held wild birds and participated in banding, saw demonstrations on hunting dogs and enforcement dogs, did fly fishing and archery demos and had a lot of fun while learning about the environment. Highly recommend this event and I hope to volunteer my services in the future.

first blog
I am starting my first full week of teacher education at Brock and I am very excited. As part of my tech course I am learning to blog. I have never kept a diary or read anyone elses blogs so I am not sure how to go about it. Hopefully it will get easier.
